Community

Citizenship Ceremonies

Citizenship Ceremonies are hosted by Council for new Australians. People wishing to apply for Australian citizenship can do so by contacting the local post office for application forms and information, or by visiting the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs web site www.immi.gov.au.

Community Development

Council's Community Development Team provides community-based services and facilities that aim to improve the quality of life and well-being of the community. The services include: Arts, Heritage and Culture, Community Pride, Disability Access, Events and the Matt Dann Cultural Centre, Youth Services, Recreation Services, Club Development Services, the JD Hardie Centre, Library Services and Community Development.

Community Pride Activities

Council offers a range of programs and projects aimed at celebrating life in Hedland and supporting community groups to improve the quality of social life in community. The "Make Hedland Home" group invites newcomers to the community to free BBQ and 'get-to-know' evenings held regularly throughout the year. Other events and initiatives include the Great Northern Cleanup and Clean Up Australia Day activities, establishing a community garden, the Christmas lights competition.

Community Safety

Council's Local Emergency Committee works in partnership with the many agencies in Town involved in responding to emergencies such as cyclones, flooding and storm surge, bushfires, major crashesand air or sea disasters.

The Town's Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan drives many initiatives across a wide range of agencies to enhance the community's safety. A CCTV project, has been implemented to boost security of residents and visitors throughout the Town.

The Events Team organise and run a number of major community events each year, in collaboration with Celebrate! Hedland INC., and can provide you with information on developing, organising and promoting your event.

Council's Calendar of Events is updated monthly and is a key planning tool for anyone planning a community-based event. Community members, not for profit groups and businesses are encouraged to visit the online calendar to see what's already on in Town before scheduling their event. Residents can also access the Hedland Community Events Brochure from Libraries, the JD Hardie Centre, the Civic Centre, Matt Dann Cultural Centre and other community facilities.

The Town of Port Hedland actively seeks to keep the community up to date with the latest in Council initiatives, providing weekly media releases and a monthly edition of Town Talk in the local newspaper.
